UK Police Chief Suspended Over False Claim of Falklands War Medal

Highlights
  • Nick Adderley, senior British police officer, suspended for falsely claiming a Falklands War medal.
  • Adderley's claim of fighting in the Falklands War debunked as he was only 15 when the war began.
  • The credibility and integrity of Adderley under scrutiny due to the misleading claim.
Story

Mr Adderley claimed he received the South Atlantic Medal from his brother, but he wore it as if it was his own. This made it seem like he served in the Falklands conflict, which he did not. He is accused of lying about his rank, years of service, and accomplishments in the Royal Navy. He applied to be the chief constable of Northamptonshire police and said he served in the navy for 10 years and was a Falklands war veteran. In reality, he only served for two years and was 15 when the conflict started in 1982. Mr Adderley admitted to lying about attending Dartmouth on his CV. He said he was rejected but wrote that he attended for four years to show ambition. He also claimed to have worked as a negotiator in Haiti, but he only wrote a paper on the subject and said his application was poorly worded. Mr Adderley tried to create a false military and naval legend about himself. He was actually only an able seaman and served for two years before being discharged. A press release from Northamptonshire police last year falsely stated that Mr Adderley served in the Navy for a decade and in the Falklands war. Mr Adderley approved the release and thanked them for it. He is now facing possible criminal charges after the police watchdog sent a report to the Crown Prosecution Service.
