Stellantis CEO announces $25,000 electric Jeep for the U.S. market

Jeep, a company known for tough off-road vehicles, has introduced its first electric SUV for North America. The Wagoneer S will see if Jeep customers like electric cars. This happens when people are less interested in electric cars, even though rules about them are getting stricter. The new SUV shows how Jeep's parent company, Stellantis, can make different types of electric cars quickly. Stellantis says their new cars can be gas-powered, plug-in hybrids, or fully electric. The Ramcharger, unlike most plug-in hybrids, can drive a long way on electricity before using gas. The Wagoneer S is sleeker and faster than current Jeep Wagoneer models. It can make 600 horsepower and go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. It can drive over 300 miles on one charge before needing to recharge. Even though Jeep is known for off-road cars, Stellantis didn't talk about off-road abilities when showing the Wagoneer S. But they did show a concept version called the Wagoneer S Trailhawk, with big off-road tires and raised suspension. This will be one of the most capable Jeeps. Stellantis is moving away from using chrome on their cars because of worries about the chemicals used to make it. The Wagoneer S has five drive modes that adjust things like power and traction control. It will cost around $72,000. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said they plan to sell a $25,000 electric Jeep in the U.S. soon. He didn't give many details but said they can do it because they already sell cheap electric cars in other places. The cheapest Stellantis electric car in the U.S. is the $32,500 Fiat 500e. Tavares thinks the global car market is tough right now. He said Chinese electric cars might come to the U.S., but tariffs could slow them down.
