Highlights
  • Mexico is facing a deadly heatwave linked to the deaths of at least 48 people.
  • Meanwhile, Finland is experiencing unseasonal heat with temperatures 3-4C higher than normal.
  • Parts of the southern United States are also bracing for extreme temperatures up to 111 degrees Fahrenheit.
Story

In May, Finland had very warm weather with temperatures much higher than usual during the day and night in many areas. The country had 16 days of heatwaves, breaking the previous record of 14 days in 2018. Heatwaves are when temperatures reach 25C. The south and west had temperatures 3-4C higher than normal, while the north and east were 1-3C above normal. On May 31, the warmest day of the month was recorded at 29.9C in Hattula Lepaa. This was due to a large area of high pressure over northern Europe, causing high temperatures in Norway and Sweden too. Climate change may have contributed, making temperatures about 2C higher than they would have been in the past. The warm weather continued into June, but it will return to normal by the end of the week due to low pressure. In Mexico, a heat dome has caused extreme temperatures for over a month, leading to at least 60 deaths. The heat dome traps warm air, resulting in record-breaking temperatures. The heatwave is moving towards the US, with temperatures up to 111F expected in Florida, Texas, and Nevada. The heat dome blocks cooler air, increases wildfire risk, and causes high heat indexes. The heat dome has been breaking records in Mexico, with temperatures reaching 118.4F in Valle Nacional. The country is also facing drought, with many deaths from heat-related illnesses. The heat has killed howler monkeys and is not expected to dissipate soon. The southern US is preparing for high temperatures too.
