Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger was upset with House Speaker Mike Johnson for supporting former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict. Kinzinger, who is now a CNN political commentator, criticized Johnson's statement that Trump's conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records could help him win a second term as President. Kinzinger, a person of faith, expressed disappointment in Johnson for lying about the situation, especially given his influential position. He believed that despite the legal aspects, politically, Trump's conviction wouldn't sway voters from supporting Joe Biden to supporting Trump. Kinzinger attributed this belief to the influence of social media and what he called "mass psychosis." He felt that while Trump's most loyal supporters might be pleased, the majority of Americans would find the situation strange. Kinzinger, known for his criticism of Trump, was one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his involvement in the Capitol riot of January 6, 2021. He, along with former Rep. Liz Cheney, were the only GOP members on the committee investigating the attack. Kinzinger mentioned that some Republicans might feel uneasy voting for a convicted felon like Trump. Trump's sentencing is set for July 11, just before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be named the party's presidential nominee.
