- UC Davis students are under investigation for allegedly leaving trash and debris at Shasta Lake.
- The U.S. Forest Service reported the littering incident after Memorial Day Weekend parties.
- Disciplinary action may be taken against the students by the University of California, Davis.
Some students from UC Davis and the University of Oregon may get in trouble for leaving trash at Lake Shasta after Memorial Day Weekend parties. The U.S. Forest Service had to spend six hours and use 17 trash bags to clean up the mess. Around 3,000 students were accused of leaving behind cups, cans, and other items despite being asked to clean up. The trash at the bottom of the lake can't be removed until later because of safety reasons. The Forest Service needs to wait for water levels to drop before clearing out the rest of the pollution. They are concerned about animals getting sick from eating plastic. Both universities were informed about the situation. UC Davis mentioned that students must follow the rules, and not doing so could lead to disciplinary action. The Forest Service emphasized the importance of taking care of the environment. UC Davis officials have not specified the consequences students might face if found guilty of breaking school rules.
