China accused Britain's MI6 of convincing a man named Wang and his wife, Zhou, who worked for the Chinese government, to spy for the UK. MI6 started cultivating Wang in 2015 while he was studying in the UK, learning about his weaknesses and interests. They offered him money to provide information about China's central state agencies. Wang was then directed to return to China to gather intelligence and persuade Zhou to do the same. China's Ministry of State Security took action against Wang and Zhou, but did not provide details about their current jobs or the information they shared. China and Western powers have been accusing each other of spying. Last month, a man charged with helping Hong Kong gather intelligence in the UK was found dead. In April, German authorities arrested four people for spying for China, while British police charged two men with passing sensitive information to Beijing. China claimed that MI6 turned two Chinese government staff into spies for Britain. The case is under investigation. Wang, who studied in the UK in 2015, was persuaded by MI6 to spy for them. He was instructed to collect important information in China. MI6 also convinced Wang to involve his wife, Zhou, who worked in a key government unit, by offering more money. Zhou agreed to participate in the espionage activities.
