The mayor of a town in western Mexico was killed on Monday, along with her bodyguard. The mayor, Sanchez, was elected in 2021. She was shot multiple times outside a gym. The bodyguard, Jesús V., was also hit and died. Sanchez wanted to make Cotija a better place to live. Authorities are trying to catch the killers. Sanchez was kidnapped last year but found alive later. Michoacan, where the town is located, is known for tourism and agriculture but also for violence due to gangs. Before the recent elections, 23 political candidates were killed. One mayoral candidate's murder was caught on camera. In another incident, nine people were killed in attacks on candidates. Last month, six people, including a mayoral candidate, were killed in an ambush. Another candidate was shot dead while campaigning.
