Highlights
  • United Airlines is adjusting its hiring goals for 2024 to 10,000 workers, down from the original target.
  • The change is a result of Boeing manufacturing delays impacting the airline's recruitment plans.
  • Despite the adjustment, United Airlines continues to expand its workforce amidst growing air travel demand.
Story

United Airlines planned to hire 10,000 employees this year, but they reduced this number from 13,000 to 15,000 due to delays in Boeing aircraft. The airline's hiring depends on its orders and growth. United, a major Boeing customer, faced issues before due to delays in Boeing's aircraft certification and manufacturing. The airline had to pause new hire classes in May and June because of these delays. United Airlines will start hiring pilots again in July after canceling classes earlier. The company has already hired over 4,000 people this year to meet summer demand. They hired 16,000 employees in 2023 and 15,000 in 2022. United expects to hire around 10,000 workers this year, but the pace will be slower due to Boeing's delays. United Airlines received 260,000 job applications this year, including 40,000 for internships. They plan to hire 2,300 in Chicago, 1,500 in Newark, 1,300 in San Francisco, and 900 in Houston. Most of the new jobs will support the airline's growth, but some will replace employees leaving the company. Boeing's production and deliveries slowed down after an incident in January, affecting United and other airlines. United would have hired more people if they received all expected Boeing jets. The airline needs extra staff to meet increasing travel demand.
