Crews fought a fire at Second Avenue Commons in downtown Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The fire caused almost 200 people to be displaced. KDKA-TV's Andy Sheehan reported on the incident. The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office shared on social media about the heavy response to the fire at the homeless shelters, urging people to stay away from the area. The fire caused significant damage to the top floor and roof, leading to smoke and other elements entering the building. The 180 residents were evacuated, and Pittsburgh Regional Transit assisted in transporting them to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for emergency shelter. The goal was to provide a safe and comfortable space with proper air conditioning due to rising temperatures. Chief Jones mentioned that four firefighters were injured, with three sent to the hospital. Additionally, two individuals outside were hospitalized for heat-related injuries. The flames resulted in substantial damage to the roof, with black smoke visible in Downtown Pittsburgh. The sheriff's office personnel aided in evacuating residents and ensuring all floors were clear. More assistance will be required to support the individuals at the convention center until they can return to Second Avenue Commons. Efforts are being made to secure more permanent housing options for those affected by the fire. Plans are in place to transition people from emergency shelters to stable living arrangements.
