Joe Manchin still undeclared for candidacy five months before the election

Highlights
  • Joe Manchin of West Virginia has not confirmed his candidacy for the upcoming election yet.
  • Despite the ongoing election season, there is still time for Joe Manchin to make a decision.
  • The uncertainty lingers over Joe Manchin's political intentions as the election approaches.
Story

Manchin changed his political party on May 31 to keep supporting what most people think is right in America. He had been thinking about this since last August. Manchin has been in the Senate since 2010, when he won a special election after the previous senator passed away. Instead of running for Senate again, he supported Jim Justice, who won as a Democrat but later became a Republican. This made people think Manchin might run for governor again, a job he was popular in. West Virginia now has more Republicans than Democrats or people with no party. If Manchin runs for governor, he will compete against Republican Patrick Morrisey and Democrat Steve Williams, the mayor of Huntington. In the last Senate race, Manchin beat Morrisey by a small margin. Manchin will also have to deal with the strong support for Trump in West Virginia. If Manchin doesn't run for Senate, Republicans believe Justice can win his seat. If Manchin runs as an independent, he will face Justice and Democrat Glenn Elliott, whom he supported in the primary. Manchin and Justice had a disagreement when Justice switched parties during his first term as governor. Justice is a wealthy businessman who supports Trump. In April, a group called No Labels stopped looking for a presidential candidate. Manchin was seen as a top choice to challenge dissatisfaction with Biden and Trump.
