Austrian journalist expelled from Russia in retaliation for Tass journalist expulsion from Austria
- Russia expels an Austrian journalist after Austria kicked out a Tass journalist in a tit-for-tat move.
- The correspondent for Austria’s public broadcaster ORF has been ordered to leave Russia.
- Tensions between the two countries rise following the reciprocal expulsions.
Russia's Foreign Ministry revoked the accreditation of an ORF correspondent and ordered her to leave the country in response to Austria expelling a Tass journalist. Maria Knips-Witting was instructed to depart soon, having been based in Moscow since January. This move followed Austria's removal of Tass correspondent Ivan Popov's accreditation six weeks prior. The action against foreign journalists in Russia includes the arrest of Wall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges and the denial of visa renewals for journalists like Eva Hartog and Xavier Colas.
