Early Juneteenth festivities in North Texas are focused on educating the community about Black history and celebrating it. Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts in establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday. Events in various cities like Lewisville, Denton, and McKinney include music, food, and activities to commemorate Juneteenth. The Dallas Cowboys are hosting a Juneteenth Celebration with live entertainment, food trucks, and Black-owned businesses.
