Rep. Matt Gaetz has proposed a plan to keep Steve Bannon out of jail while he appeals his conviction. Bannon, a conservative commentator and ally to former President Donald Trump, has asked a federal appeals court to allow him to remain out of prison while he continues to challenge his conviction on two counts of contempt of Congress. Bannon argues that he should be allowed to remain free as he mounts further appeals, including to the Supreme Court. The judges allowed Bannon to remain free while he pursued an appeal of his conviction, stating that he deliberately refused to comply with the House select committee's subpoena. Bannon's lawyers believe the Supreme Court would be interested in reviewing his conviction. The court is set to issue a ruling on his request to remain out of prison by June 18. Bannon is the second former official from the Trump White House found guilty of contempt of Congress. Peter Navarro, another former official, is serving a prison sentence for similar charges. Bannon's lawyer argues that sending him to prison now would be unfair as he has not exhausted all his appeals.
