Story

Brian Michael Gaherty of Houston was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for making death threats to Rep. Maxine Waters. He was charged with multiple counts of making threats in interstate communications and threatening a United States official. Gaherty pleaded guilty to one count of threatening a United States official and admitted to making threats of assault and murder to Waters on multiple occasions. Despite being warned by law enforcement, Gaherty continued to leave threatening voicemails to Waters. The judge added a hate-crime enhancement to his sentence due to targeting Waters because of her race. Gaherty's lawyer stated that his client was apologetic and attributed his actions to mental health issues resulting from being a victim of violent crime. Gaherty offered a heartfelt plea for forgiveness to Waters during his sentencing.
