Protesters disrupt Broadway musical 'Suffs' with banner and chants

In New York, a performance of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Suffs," centered on the suffragist movement, faced a brief disruption as protesters unveiled a banner with the slogan "Suffs Is a White Wash" and chanted "Cancel ‘Suffs!’". The protest, lasting around 20 seconds, led to the removal of several demonstrators from the box seats by theater staff and the banner being taken down. Despite the interruption, a show representative assured that the safety of both company members and patrons at the Music Box Theatre was not compromised. The musical, created by Shaina Taub and with Hillary Clinton as one of its producers, had recently received two Tonys. The protesters, self-described as "radical, anti-racist, queer feminists," criticized the show on their website, labeling it as "a betrayal of the next generation of feminists" and "rehashed white feminism." While the show's producers and creative team chose not to directly address the group's grievances, the musical itself delves into the racism within the suffragist movement and highlights the significant contributions of Black women to the fight for voting rights. This incident marked the second disruption of a Broadway show in less than four months. Previously, on March 15, "An Enemy of the People," featuring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, was halted by a climate activist group chanting "No theater on a dead planet." The protests at these performances reflect a growing trend of activism within the arts community, where social and political issues are being brought to the forefront through public demonstrations and statements.
