The only three-time champion of the derby is Ken Griffey Jr., who clinched the title in 1994, 1998, and 1999 since its inception in 1985. Alonso's previous wins in the Home Run Derby came in 2019 at Cleveland's Progressive Field, where he defeated Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero in a close final round, and in 2021 at Denver's Coors Field, where he bested Baltimore's Trey Mancini. The 2020 edition of the derby was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Alonso faced elimination in the 2022 semifinals at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles at the hands of Seattle's Julio Rodríguez, who went on to win, with Juan Soto emerging victorious the year before. Last year at Seattle's T-Mobile Park, Alonso was knocked out by Rodríguez, with Guerrero ultimately claiming the championship and making history by becoming part of the first father-son duo to win the Home Run Derby, following in the footsteps of his father's victory in 2007.
