California company recalls 1 million power adapters over shock hazard for baby sound machines
- California company Hatch is recalling nearly 1 million power adapters sold with sound machines intended for infants and young children.
- The recall is due to a shock hazard posed by the power adapters.
- Parents are advised to stop using the affected power adapters immediately to prevent any potential harm to children.
In a recent development, a California-based company is issuing a recall for nearly 1 million power adapters that were sold with sound machines designed to aid infants and young children in sleeping. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission highlighted a shock hazard associated with the plastic surrounding the AC power adapter supplied with some of Hatch's Rest 1st generation sound machines. The issue arises when the plastic housing around the adapter detaches, exposing its prongs and posing a risk of electric shock. The recall specifically targets power adapters provided by Jiangsu Chenyang Electron Co., prompting Hatch to cease sourcing from the supplier for its products. Hatch, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, clarified that the safety concern lies solely with the power adapter accompanying the sleeping machines and not the devices themselves. The company assured consumers that once a replacement power adapter is received, the Hatch Rest 1st generation device can be safely used. Owners of the faulty power adapters are advised to discontinue their use immediately. The recalled adapters, identified by the model number CYAP05 050100U, were distributed with Rest 1st generation sound machines on Hatch.co and various major retailers such as Target and Walmart from January 2019 to September 2022, with some also available on Amazon until May 2024. The affected sound machines, which offer white noise and lullabies to aid in children's sleep, along with a night light feature, saw an estimated 919,400 units sold in the U.S. and over 44,000 in Canada. Hatch is taking proactive steps by providing impacted customers with free replacement adapters and reaching out directly to all registered owners. This recall serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of infants and young children using these sound machines, emphasizing the importance of addressing potential hazards promptly to prevent any harm or accidents.
