Investigation Launched into Loss of Motive Power in 94,000 Jeep Wranglers

In New York, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a potential issue affecting over 94,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles. This investigation stems from complaints regarding a "loss of motive power" in these vehicles, which were not addressed in a previous recall related to engine shutdown problems in the same SUV model. The NHTSA initiated a recall query to evaluate the seriousness of the reported defect and the effectiveness of the solution provided in the earlier recall, which targeted around 63,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles from model years 2021-2023 equipped with a plug-in hybrid electric engine. Despite a calibration software update being offered as a fix following the initial recall, additional complaints have surfaced. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation highlighted 68 owner reports indicating a loss of motor power in Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles spanning model years 2021 to 2024. These complaints involve both vehicles that underwent the remedy from the 2022 recall and those initially excluded from it. Notably, the rate of reported issues is higher among the Wranglers not covered by the initial recall. The NHTSA estimates that approximately 94,275 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles from model years 2021-2024 could be impacted by this potential defect. Currently, all vehicles subject to the 2022 recall are under investigation, as confirmed by an agency spokesperson. In response to inquiries, a spokesperson for Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, stated that they are cooperating with the NHTSA regarding the investigation. The NHTSA's focus is on assessing the reported loss of motive power in these Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles and determining the necessary steps to address any safety concerns.
