US envoy promises to assist Taiwan in boosting self-defense amid rising Chinese threats

In recent developments, the United States' new top envoy to Taiwan, Raymond Greene, has pledged strong support for Taiwan's self-defense capabilities amidst escalating military threats from China. Greene, who recently assumed his role as director of the American Institute in Taiwan, emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait during a meeting with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. Taiwan, a self-ruled island of 23 million people, faces territorial claims from Beijing, which has been increasing military pressure on the island. Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported the detection of 36 Chinese military jets, including fighters and bombers, conducting drills near the island, with the number escalating to 66 warplanes within a 24-hour period.
