Powder Mountain to Transform Ski Experience with Major Art Installations
- Reed Hastings, former Netflix CEO, purchased Powder Mountain ski resort in Utah.
- He is transforming it into an outdoor sculpture park, blending art and nature.
- The ski resort is now being revamped into an art hub for visitors to enjoy.
Powder Mountain, recognized as North America's largest ski resort by skiable acreage, is set to enhance its skiing experience through the installation of significant artworks by renowned contemporary artists, including James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, Nancy Holt, and Paul McCarthy. This initiative is part of a strategic plan to develop a world-class sculpture park across the resort's expansive 8,464 acres, rather than merely adding random pieces of art. The vision for this artistic transformation comes from Reed Hastings, the former CEO and co-founder of Netflix, who recently became the majority owner of Powder Mountain following a $100 million investment. Hastings, who stepped down from his role at Netflix in January 2023, aims to create a cohesive experience that integrates art into the resort's landscape. “At Powder, we want every experience—from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum—to be intentional,” Hastings stated in a press release. The curatorial approach emphasizes the thoughtful integration of art with the natural environment and the seasonal dynamics of the mountain. This vision draws inspiration from the historical land art movements of the American West, as articulated by the resort's representatives. Visitors can expect to see some of these artworks on display during the upcoming 2024-2025 ski season, marking a significant step in redefining the recreational experience at Powder Mountain.
