Clyburn Calls for Unity Ahead of Democratic National Convention
- Rep. Jim Clyburn emphasizes the need for unity within the Democratic Party ahead of the national convention.
- His comments come amid internal conflicts following President Biden's withdrawal and growing support for Vice President Harris as a nominee.
- Clyburn's call for a 'lovefest' aims to bring together party members and foster collaboration.
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) has emphasized the need for unity among Democrats as the party prepares for the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Clyburn suggests that a “lovefest” is essential to present a united front to the American public, especially in light of divisions surrounding President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and Vice President Kamala Harris’s rise as the leading candidate. He believes that internal discord could undermine the party’s chances in the election, stating, “A party doesn’t win when it looks like it’s in disarray.” The South Carolina representative, a key figure in the Congressional Black Caucus, expressed concern over the potential for conflict during the convention. Clyburn warned that a contentious atmosphere would send a negative message to voters, undermining the party's ability to advocate for unity in the nation. He noted that Democrats were already facing challenges with mixed sentiments regarding Biden’s leadership, particularly due to his age and declining poll numbers. Despite some lingering dissent, Clyburn’s support for Harris appears to be fostering a sense of solidarity among many lawmakers. However, a few House Democrats remain hesitant to endorse her, and Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) has yet to publicly support her candidacy as he navigates his own reelection campaign. The Democratic Party is expected to virtually nominate Harris and her running mate by August 7, with the convention set to commence on August 19, following the Republican National Convention.
