- Preparation for October 31 test flight underway.
Navi Mumbai: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct a trial run involving a C-130J transport aircraft and a Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet as preparations intensify for the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The first trial aircraft is expected to land on October 31, 2024, following recent testing of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). An IAF official confirmed the use of the Sukhoi Su-30 for the testing but did not disclose specific details regarding the timing of the trial. This trial run is a critical step in assessing the airport's infrastructure and systems ahead of its official opening for commercial flights in March 2025. The process will involve calibrating flight paths and securing necessary approvals, which are anticipated to take several months. The new airport, equipped with modern infrastructure and enhanced capacity, is expected to serve as a significant hub for both domestic and international travel. The AAI's Flight Inspection Unit (FIU) recently completed ILS testing at runway 08R/26L, focusing on various operational aspects to ensure the runway's readiness. The findings from this testing will be submitted to the AAI for further action. The ILS is a vital tool that provides pilots with precise vertical and horizontal guidance during landing approaches. In a notable development, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has assigned the location code ‘NMI’ to Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd., facilitating smoother operations within the aviation industry and enhancing the airport's integration into global travel systems.
