Substack Enhances Mobile Experience with New Drafting Feature

Substack has announced a significant update to its iOS app, allowing writers to draft and publish posts directly from their mobile devices. Previously, users could only read content through the app, but this new feature positions Substack to compete more effectively with platforms like Medium and WordPress, which already offer similar capabilities. The initial version of the mobile editor includes basic text and image publishing functionalities, with plans for future updates to enhance the user experience. The company is also working on additional features, such as syncing in-app drafts with the web dashboard, post scheduling, and editing capabilities. While the current mobile editor is exclusive to iOS, Substack has indicated that an Android version is forthcoming. The introduction of these features aims to facilitate on-the-go writing, enabling users to share quick updates and behind-the-scenes content with their subscribers. Writers can easily access the new editor by tapping the orange “plus” button on the app's home screen, where they can create drafts that are autosaved. The process allows for the addition of images and embedded content, and once completed, users can select their publish and paywall settings with a simple tap. This update responds to user demand, as an in-app post editor was one of the most requested features since the app's launch in March 2022. Substack reports that over 25% of subscriptions now originate from the app, with app users experiencing a 50% increase in paid subscriptions compared to those who do not use the app. This enhancement reflects Substack's commitment to improving its platform and meeting the needs of its writing community.
