SpaceX poised to increase annual launches fivefold after FAA assessment progresses

Highlights
  • SpaceX has been limited to five launches annually from Boca Chica, Texas, according to prior FAA assessments.
  • A recently drafted FAA assessment assesses the possibility of increasing this number to 25 annual launches and landings.
  • The success of this assessment could allow SpaceX to significantly enhance its launch operations and contribute to space exploration missions.
Story

In the United States, SpaceX is advancing towards significantly increasing its launch capacity from its Boca Chica base, with a new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assessment. This assessment, which was released on November 20, 2024, evaluates the potential environmental impacts of allowing up to 25 launches annually of the Starship/Super Heavy, significantly up from the previous limit of five launches per year. This new proposal also includes assessments of up to 25 landings of both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stages. The FAA has opened a public comment period lasting until January 17, 2025, to collect feedback on this proposed increase in launches. In early January 2025, the FAA will conduct four in-person public meetings in Texas and an additional virtual meeting, offering further opportunity for public engagement.
