Yankees Call Up Tim Mayza to Strengthen Bullpen

DETROIT — The New York Yankees have strengthened their bullpen by calling up left-handed reliever Tim Mayza ahead of their series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Mayza joins Tim Hill as the second lefty option for manager Aaron Boone, as the team seeks to address recent struggles within their relief pitching unit. The 32-year-old Mayza was signed to a minor league contract in July after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite a challenging season with the Blue Jays, where he recorded an 8.03 ERA over 35 games, Mayza had a standout performance last year with a 1.52 ERA in 69 appearances. His recent stint at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre showcased a resurgence, as he posted a 2.16 ERA in nine games. The decision to promote Mayza was unexpected, given the presence of other potential call-ups like Scott Effross, Nick Burdi, and Ron Marinaccio, who are also waiting for opportunities at Triple-A. Effross, who has not pitched in the majors since 2022 due to Tommy John and back surgery, has shown improvement since returning from rehab. The Yankees had an available spot on their 40-man roster for Mayza after designating reliever Enyel De Los Santos for assignment earlier this week. This move was part of a roster shuffle that included Will Warren, who made a spot start against the White Sox before being sent back to Triple-A.
