- The installation is expected to generate interest in the region and attract tourists.
A vibrant art trail featuring painted sculptures of oxen has been launched across Oxfordshire, showcasing 31 life-sized and 100 miniature ox sculptures. Each piece is uniquely decorated by local and international artists, as well as schoolchildren, and is part of the OxTrail installation organized by Sobell House Hospice in collaboration with Wild in Art. The exhibition will be on display until the end of August, inviting residents and visitors to explore the artistic creations. The large oxen sculptures are strategically placed in Oxford’s city center, near notable landmarks such as the Westgate shopping center, Oxford Castle, and St Michael at the North Gate. Meanwhile, the miniature oxen, decorated by approximately 85 schools and community groups, can be found in various libraries, hotels, and community spaces throughout the county. An accompanying app and map are available to help visitors navigate the trail and discover the diverse array of sculptures. In addition to the art display, Oxford Brookes University has developed educational resources aimed at helping young people cope with bereavement. These resources were created in partnership with Sobell House and include packs filled with poems, art, and activities designed to facilitate discussions about grief and loss among children. Beth Marsh from Sobell House emphasized the importance of these materials, stating they provide essential support for teachers addressing sensitive topics. The sculptures will be auctioned on September 13, with all proceeds benefiting Sobell House Hospice, ensuring that the impact of the OxTrail event extends beyond its duration.
