NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A tornado classified as EF-0 touched down in Ulster County on Friday, coinciding with the remnants of Hurricane Debby impacting the Tri-State Area, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The tornado crossed the New York State Thruway near exit 18 in New Paltz shortly before 6 p.m., with peak wind speeds reaching 76 mph. EF-0 tornadoes are characterized as the weakest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with wind speeds ranging from 65 to 85 mph. The NWS Albany conducted a damage survey revealing that the tornado uprooted several trees along its path, which measured approximately 0.59 miles in length and 30 yards in width. Fortunately, the tornado lasted only about a minute, and there were no reported injuries. A tornado watch was issued for parts of New York and New Jersey for several hours as the storm system moved through the region. In addition to the tornado, gusty winds associated with the storm caused widespread damage, knocking down trees and utility lines across the Tri-State Area. This led to significant power outages and disrupted commutes for many residents. The severe weather also resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights at local airports, with many more experiencing delays. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the remnants of Hurricane Debby move through the area, urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential further weather disturbances.
