Story

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has initiated the tendering process for the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project, which will span 29 kilometers and feature 22 stations. This corridor is strategically located along the western periphery of Thane city, bordered by the Ulhas River and Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The project aims to enhance connectivity between major business hubs and provide a reliable transport option for daily commuters, including students and office workers. Completion is anticipated by 2029. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 12,200.10 crore, with funding sourced from the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and bilateral agencies. Innovative financing methods, such as monetization of assets and value capture financing, will also be employed to support the project. The metro line is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions in the region. MahaMetro is currently managing other metro projects in Nagpur and Pune, and the Thane Ring Metro has been added to its portfolio. The project was initially assigned to the Thane Municipal Corporation but was later transferred to MahaMetro for execution. Five consultants have submitted proposals to design approximately 8 kilometers of the corridor, including both Indian and French firms. Once operational, the metro is projected to serve a daily ridership of 6.47 lakh passengers by 2029, increasing to 8.72 lakh by 2045. This development is expected to play a crucial role in realizing the economic potential of Thane city and improving the overall quality of life for its residents.
