Tim Walz's Impact on Former Students

As Minnesota Governor Tim Walz prepares to address the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former students from Mankato West High School are gathering to show their support. Alumni, including attorney and LGBT+ rights activist Reitan, reflect on the Walzes' positive impact during their formative years. Reitan emphasized the significance of having a supportive figure like Walz, a respected football coach, during a time when acceptance for LGBTQ+ students was limited. She noted that the Walzes fostered a more inclusive community, allowing many students to embrace their identities. The convention will also feature Ben Ingman, a former student and neighbor of Walz, who will officially nominate him for the party's candidacy. Ingman, along with other former football players and their coach, Rick Sutton, will be present to honor Walz's contributions. Amanda Hinkle, another former student, shared her gratitude for Walz's encouragement, recalling how he helped her realize her dreams by transforming her sketches into a theater set for a school production. Ida Moen Johnson, a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Madison, praised the Walzes for setting high standards and supporting all students. She expressed excitement about having an educator in a prominent political role. Richelle Norton, who helped establish Mankato West Alumni for Harris-Walz, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the Walzes' enduring dedication to their students and the community.
