- Police investigating the tragic event.
An Arizona State University (ASU) professor, David Zhu, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting his wife, Susan Yijuan Yan, at their Scottsdale home on Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. while their two teenage children were present in the house. Yan, 46, sustained a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the Scottsdale Police Department. Police reports indicate that Zhu claimed he was attempting to shoot the wall behind his wife during a heated argument. The couple's children, aged 19 and 14, informed authorities that domestic violence had been a recurring issue in their household, and they expressed no surprise at the tragic outcome of the confrontation. The police described the incident as isolated, confirming that no one else was harmed. Following the shooting, Zhu was arrested and booked into Maricopa County Jail with a bond set at $1 million. He has been a faculty member at ASU's W. P. Carey School of Business since 2009. As of Monday, the university confirmed that Zhu remains employed but has been placed on administrative leave, prohibiting him from campus and all school-related activities while the personnel process is underway. An ASU spokesperson extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy, emphasizing the university's commitment to addressing the situation in accordance with local policies and regulations.
