Sutter County seeks to transform electricity costs with new provider

Yuba City has proactively led this initiative by formally pursuing the expansion independently from Sutter County. Mayor Dave Shaw emphasized the benefits of this move, highlighting that it could lead to savings for both the city and its residents. Many local residents, particularly those on fixed incomes, express their eagerness for cheaper alternatives to their current electricity provider, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The city council plans to finalize its resolution shortly, marking a significant step toward potential implementation. Pioneer Community Energy appears to be a viable alternative to traditional utilities because of its ability to procure power at competitive rates due to the absence of corporate overhead and shareholders. Since its inception in 2018, the company has reportedly saved customers over $108 million. These savings stem from its mission to offer lower energy rates while focusing on the needs of its constituents.
