Royal Navy upgrades Sting Ray torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare

The Royal Navy is set to enhance its Sting Ray torpedoes with a significant £60 billion upgrade, aimed at bolstering its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. This initiative, awarded to BAE Systems, Europe’s largest defense contractor, will introduce advanced technological features and new deployment options for the torpedoes. The upgrades are a response to emerging threats in underwater defense, ensuring the Royal Navy remains prepared for future challenges. The contract will create approximately 100 new jobs, with 80 engineering positions located at BAE Systems' Maritime Services in Portsmouth and 20 manufacturing roles in Hillend, Fife. This investment not only supports the Royal Navy's strategic objectives but also stimulates growth in the UK’s small and medium-sized enterprises and high-tech suppliers. Commodore Steve Bolton emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating that it signifies confidence in the Sting Ray's development and its role in maintaining the UK’s underwater defense capabilities. The four-year assessment phase will involve designing, constructing prototypes, and conducting in-water trials to ensure the torpedoes meet the required standards. This announcement comes on the heels of a significant operation where the Royal Navy intercepted a submarine carrying £160 million worth of cocaine, showcasing its operational effectiveness in challenging conditions. The upgrades to the Sting Ray torpedoes are expected to further enhance the Royal Navy's ability to address both current and future threats in maritime security.
