New York man faces federal charges for making explosives in Manhattan

In early June 2025, authorities in New York arrested Michael Gann, a 55-year-old resident of Inwood, after he was accused of constructing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and placing them throughout Manhattan. According to federal prosecutors, Gann manufactured these explosives using precursor chemicals ordered online, demonstrating a clear intention to create dangerous devices. He reportedly assembled at least seven IEDs, storing several of them on the rooftops of apartment buildings in the SoHo neighborhood. His activities included throwing one IED onto the subway tracks of the Williamsburg Bridge, an act that could have endangered numerous lives. Gann's criminal history includes 12 felony arrests and several convictions, which adds a layer of complexity to this case. The U.S. Attorney's Office states that Gann faces serious charges, including attempted destruction of property, transportation of explosive materials, and unlawful possession of destructive devices. If convicted, Gann could face a lengthy prison sentence that could reach up to 40 years, reflecting the gravity of his actions.
