In a recent statement, Vice President Kamala Harris criticized former President Donald Trump’s proposed economic policies, claiming they would effectively introduce a national sales tax, which she dubbed a "Trump tax." This tax could increase costs for middle-class families by nearly $4,000 annually. Trump has suggested implementing a 10% tariff on all non-domestic goods sold in the U.S., with think tanks like the American Action Forum estimating that this could add between $1,700 and $2,350 to household expenses each year. Harris also highlighted Trump's agenda regarding reproductive rights, asserting that he and his allies aim to restrict access to birth control and impose a nationwide abortion ban. This agenda is reflected in Project 2025, which proposes significant changes to the Department of Health and Human Services, including redefining abortion as non-healthcare and reversing the FDA's approval of mifepristone, a key medication used in abortions. The project suggests stricter regulations on mifepristone, such as reducing the permissible use period from 10 weeks to 7 weeks and mandating in-person prescriptions. Additionally, it advocates for the enforcement of the 1873 Comstock Act to restrict the mailing of abortion-related medications and proposes withholding federal funds from states that do not report abortion statistics. While Trump has expressed that states should determine their own abortion regulations and has stated he would not obstruct access to contraceptives, he has not publicly addressed the Comstock Act or its potential implications for abortion medication.
