Story

In a recent Ipsos poll, Sir Keir Starmer's favourability rating has plummeted to zero, signaling a potential end to Labour's initial honeymoon period following the election. The survey, conducted from August 9-12, reveals that while Starmer remains the most popular politician with 38% of respondents viewing him favourably, an equal percentage holds an unfavourable opinion. This marks a significant decline from a net rating of plus seven immediately after the election. The poll also highlights a growing sense of discontent among the British public, with 52% believing the country is heading in the wrong direction, compared to just 22% who feel things are improving. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner's ratings have also dipped, with 33% favourable and 36% unfavourable opinions. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have seen similar declines, with unfavourable ratings rising among respondents. Gideon Skinner, senior director of UK politics at Ipsos, noted that while Labour is still more popular than the Conservatives were two months after their 2019 victory, there are signs of increasing public criticism. He emphasized that the level of pessimism regarding the state of the country will be crucial for Labour's long-term prospects, as they must address public concerns to maintain support. Overall, the poll indicates a shift in public sentiment, with Labour leaders facing rising scrutiny as they navigate the challenges of governance in a climate of uncertainty.
