Sanjay Raut appears in court for money-laundering case in Mumbai

Sanjay Raut, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), appeared in a Special PMLA court in Mumbai on Thursday as part of a regular hearing related to a money-laundering case involving the Goregaon Patra Chawl. This appearance was in accordance with the bail conditions set for him, and the next hearing is scheduled for October 21. The case revolves around the alleged misappropriation of funds linked to a redevelopment project that was supposed to benefit 672 tenants but failed to deliver adequate housing. The Patra Chawl redevelopment project, initiated in 2008, was intended to provide housing for displaced tenants and was part of a tripartite agreement involving the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and a private developer. However, the developer reportedly received Rs 901.79 crore without fulfilling the obligations to construct housing for the tenants, raising serious concerns about financial misconduct. In a related development, Swapna Patkar, a witness in the case, has raised alarming allegations of threats and intimidation aimed at her to alter her statements during the investigation. She has reported incidents of harassment, including a threatening letter found in a bottle thrown at her residence, which has heightened fears for her safety. These events underscore the ongoing complexities and tensions surrounding the case, as Raut faces serious allegations while witnesses like Patkar contend with significant pressure.
