Veterans Advocate Celebrates WWII Sailor's 100th Birthday
- A San Mateo man dedicated to helping unhoused military veterans is celebrating the 100th birthday of a World War II sailor.
- This celebration highlights the ongoing support and community efforts for the county's 24,000 veterans.
- It reflects a growing mission to reach and assist more veterans in need.
In a heartfelt tribute to World War II veteran Frank Abramo, local resident John Helin organized a surprise 100th birthday party at the San Mateo Elks Lodge. Helin, who has dedicated the past six years to serving veterans, expressed his admiration for men like Abramo, who fought in the South Pacific during the war. "For me, they're model men," Helin remarked, highlighting the significance of honoring those who have served. Helin's commitment to veterans extends beyond celebrations. He runs a nonprofit organization, Our Mission Our Veterans, which has helped over 800 formerly unhoused service members by providing them with donated furniture to create comfortable living spaces. His efforts were recognized when he received the Jefferson Award in 2022, bringing attention to his work in the community. In addition to his furniture initiative, Helin hosts an annual Christmas party for veterans, which has grown to accommodate around 300 guests. He is also collaborating with the county veteran's commission to develop a comprehensive website that will serve as a resource hub for veterans seeking various services. "I want to help you," Helin stated, emphasizing his dedication to supporting those in need. As Abramo celebrated his milestone birthday, he reflected on the outpouring of support from friends and community members. "I never thought I'd have so many friends come out and wish me a 100th birthday," he said, underscoring Helin's mission to ensure that veterans receive the recognition and assistance they deserve for their sacrifices.
