Story

A U.S. military base in eastern Syria was targeted by a one-way drone attack on August 9, resulting in several minor injuries among personnel. According to a U.S. defense official, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. ET at the Rumalyn Landing Zone, where individuals suffered from smoke inhalation and were evaluated for potential traumatic brain injuries. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening, although initial reports had suggested no injuries occurred. This attack marks a concerning resurgence of hostilities from Iranian-backed militia groups in Iraq and Syria, which had previously paused their operations for several months. Currently, approximately 900 U.S. military personnel are stationed in Syria, supporting local Kurdish forces in their efforts to combat the Islamic State. In Iraq, around 2,500 U.S. troops are also engaged in counter-ISIS missions. Since mid-October, nearly 170 attacks have been reported against U.S. bases in the region, largely attributed to retaliation for the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The recent drone strike follows a period of relative calm after significant U.S. airstrikes earlier this year, which had curtailed militia activities. However, U.S. officials now suggest that Iran may be encouraging its proxy groups to resume attacks as a response to the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran, which Iran blames on Israel. In light of these developments, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced enhanced force protection measures to safeguard U.S. troops and prepare for potential support to Israel.
