Story

Texas officials have responded to a voter fraud conspiracy theory propagated by Fox News personality Maria Bartiromo, who claimed on social media that Democrats were registering immigrants to vote in Fort Worth and Weatherford. In her post on X, Bartiromo recounted her experience at a DMV, alleging that a large number of immigrants were present to obtain licenses and that a registration tent was set up outside. Although she did not explicitly state that the registration was illegal, her comments led many followers to infer that it was. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) quickly interven, labeling Bartiromo's claims as "simply false." The Fort Worth Star-Telegram highlighted that there is no DMV office in Weatherford, although a Texas Department of Public Safety Driver License office exists in the area. DPS spokesperson Sgt. William Lockridge emphasized that there was no registration site or tent present at the office last week, dismissing the allegations as unfounded. Lockridge further criticized the implications of Bartiromo's post, suggesting that it perpetuated a racist narrative by implying that non-white individuals seeking licenses were illegal immigrants. He stated, “Just because these people aren’t white, that doesn’t mean they’re illegal.” The Independent has reached out to Fox News for further comment on the matter, as the controversy surrounding the post continues to unfold.
