NEW YORK - A striking 16-foot tall pigeon sculpture, titled "Dinosaur," is set to be installed on New York City's High Line this October. Created by artist Iván Argote, the sculpture will be mounted on a five-foot plinth, bringing its total height to an impressive 21 feet. The installation will remain on display for 18 months, adding a whimsical touch to the city's skyline. Cecilia Alemani, the Donald R. Mullen, Jr. Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art, praised Argote's work, stating that it encourages viewers to reconsider familiar subjects in profound ways. The name "Dinosaur" reflects both the sculpture's grand scale and the historical significance of pigeons, whose ancestors once roamed the Earth. Argote noted that the title also serves as a reminder of extinction, drawing parallels between dinosaurs and humanity's eventual fate. Originally proposed for the High Line in 2020, "Dinosaur" sparked a polarizing response from the public, with many New Yorkers expressing strong feelings—both positive and negative—toward the city's iconic pigeon population. The High Line's statement highlighted the sculpture's potential to evoke a mix of attraction, seduction, and fear among its urban audience. "Dinosaur" marks the fourth installation in the High Line's ongoing Plinth program, following previous works by Simone Leigh, Sam Durant, and Pamela Rosenkranz, further enriching the cultural landscape of this popular public space.
