Mark Clattenburg Warns Referees About VAR Use
- Mark Clattenburg warns Premier League referees to reduce reliance on VAR technology.
- The aim is to enhance the fan experience during live matches.
- Referees advised to use VAR more judiciously for smoother gameplay.
Mark Clattenburg, a former Premier League referee, has emphasized the need for officials to assert their authority on the pitch this season, rather than overly relying on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Clattenburg, who previously served as an advisor for Nottingham Forest, believes that referees must take greater ownership of their decisions to enhance the flow of the game and reduce dependency on technology. This season, VAR is undergoing significant modifications aimed at improving communication with fans and expediting decision-making. The introduction of an “umpire’s call” approach is set to replace the controversial “clear and obvious” standard that has drawn criticism. Additionally, the Premier League has launched a new social media account to promptly inform fans about officiating decisions, while PGMOL chief Howard Webb has committed to overall improvements in officiating standards. Clattenburg noted that last season's reliance on VAR led to inconsistencies and frustration among fans, as referees hesitated to make quick decisions. He stated, “The referees have a responsibility... to get as many decisions right on the field and not rely on VAR.” He hopes that this season will see fewer interventions from VAR, allowing referees to regain confidence in their judgment. In the early matches of the season, there have been no major controversies, with the most notable incident being Harry Maguire's red card for diving in Manchester United's victory over Fulham. Clattenburg, now involved in a reality TV project, left his role at Nottingham Forest after just three months amid concerns over refereeing standards.
