Ukrainian soldier adapts to life without sight after mine explosion

In a tragic incident in Ukraine, Pavlo Martsenyuk, a 34-year-old soldier from the Khmelnytskiy region, sustained life-altering injuries from a mine blast near Pokrovsk last year. This explosion occurred while his unit was preparing for combat, marking the third time he was injured during his service but also the most severe, resulting in a total loss of sight. The gravity of his injuries necessitated extensive medical intervention, including facial and leg reconstruction. The traumatic experience underscores the hazards faced by military personnel amidst ongoing conflict in the region. Martsenyuk joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2021, motivated by a sense of duty, and initially served in the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade before facing injuries in Donetsk in June 2022 and later in 2022.
