An Australian surfer, Kai McKenzie, 23, has expressed his determination to return to the waves following a harrowing shark attack that resulted in the loss of his right leg. The incident occurred near Port Macquarie last Tuesday when McKenzie encountered what he described as the "biggest shark I’ve ever seen." In a candid Instagram post, he recounted the terrifying experience, stating that he managed to fend off the shark but not before sustaining severe injuries. After the attack, McKenzie was able to ride a wave back to shore, where a retired police officer quickly intervened, using his dog’s leash to create a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding. He was subsequently airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for emergency surgery and is currently reported to be in stable condition. Tragically, his severed leg was later found washed up on the beach, and local residents attempted to preserve it in hopes of reattachment. As of Monday, it remains uncertain whether surgeons attempted to reattach McKenzie’s leg. Nearly a week post-attack, he shared an update on social media, humorously asking followers to "spot something missing" in a photo taken in the hospital. McKenzie expressed gratitude to those who supported him during this ordeal and reaffirmed his commitment to surfing again, declaring, "I’ll be back in that water in no time!"
