A British crocodile expert, Adam Britton, has been sentenced to 10 years and five months in prison for a series of horrific animal cruelty offenses, including the rape, torture, and killing of dozens of dogs. The 52-year-old zoologist, who was based in Darwin, Australia, pleaded guilty to 56 charges of bestiality and animal cruelty at the Northern Territory Supreme Court in September 2022. His sentencing, which faced multiple delays, concluded with a lifetime ban on owning or purchasing animals. The court revealed that Britton's crimes involved the torture of 42 dogs, with 39 of them ultimately dying in a shipping container on his property, where he filmed many of the acts. Chief Justice Michael Grant condemned Britton's actions as "grotesque" and "unspeakable," emphasizing the depravity of his conduct. The judge even excused court officers from the proceedings, warning that the details of the offenses could cause severe psychological distress to those present. Evidence presented in court indicated that Britton had a "sadistic sexual interest" in animals, particularly dogs, and he often sourced them from unsuspecting pet owners in the Darwin area. Justice Grant highlighted the extreme nature of Britton's actions, stating that they fell "entirely outside any ordinary human conception and comprehension." Britton will not be eligible for parole for six years following his sentencing.
