Allianz Stadium's Drainage Issues Before NRL Finals

Allianz Stadium officials are confident that the venue will be prepared to handle heavy rainfall during the upcoming NRL finals, despite recent concerns regarding its drainage capabilities. Following a match between the Sydney Roosters and Parramatta, which left the field in swamp-like conditions after 11.5mm of rain fell in just 15 minutes, investigations into the stadium's drainage systems have been initiated. Comparatively, Brookvale Oval's turf managed the heavy rain more effectively, raising questions about Allianz's infrastructure. As the stadium gears up for an NRLW-NRL double-header on September 1 and at least one finals match next month, immediate measures have been implemented to address the drainage issues. A spokesperson for Venues NSW confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and upcoming matches will proceed as scheduled. The stadium has undertaken a comprehensive pro-coring and aerating process to enhance turf drainage while awaiting further test results. Allianz Stadium, which opened in 2022 at a cost of $828 million, features a gravel and sand layer beneath its turf to facilitate drainage. However, concerns have been raised regarding the turf's origin from a Windsor farm that experienced significant flooding prior to its installation. Although the turf was tested before being laid, officials are vigilant about potential silt levels that could impede water flow. To mitigate future issues, plans for turf replacement are set for after a series of concerts in October, ensuring that the venue remains in optimal condition for the finals.
