North Texas high schools unite to coach special needs athletes

This weekend, a collaborative event took place at Game On Sports in West Fort Worth, where eight rival high schools in North Texas came together to support special needs athletes. The event, organized by the Tara Sawyer Foundation, featured teams of special needs athletes, including the MAC Gators from Arlington, who have received support from the foundation for over a decade. The foundation was established in memory of Tara Sawyer, who tragically lost her life due to a water amoeba, and aims to empower youth and families in need. The MAC Gators, coached by David Curtis, have benefited from the foundation's assistance, allowing them to participate in tournaments across the country. The event provided a unique opportunity for high school athletes to set aside their rivalries and engage with special needs athletes, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Chris Curtis, a long-time player for the MAC Gators, expressed the familial atmosphere of the team, highlighting the joy and camaraderie experienced during competitions. The Teamed Up for TSF event not only allowed special needs athletes to showcase their skills but also enabled high school students to learn from and celebrate athletes of all abilities. The interactions between high school athletes and special needs participants created an inclusive environment, breaking down barriers and promoting understanding.
