A 22-year-old man from the Peninsula has been sentenced to 16 years in state prison after being convicted of assaulting a group of teenagers by driving his SUV into them in 2020. The San Mateo County District Attorney's office announced the sentencing of Omeed Sean Adibi on Friday, following a jury trial that concluded with a conviction on May 3. Adibi faced multiple charges, including five counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of felony hit-and-run, while he was acquitted of attempted murder and voluntary manslaughter. The incident occurred on February 29, 2020, when Adibi drove his Mercedes SUV onto the sidewalk, striking four boys aged 12 and 13. After hitting the teens, he crashed into a fire hydrant and fled the scene, dragging the hydrant behind him. One of the victims, a 12-year-old boy, sustained a traumatic brain injury and was hospitalized in critical condition, while another boy suffered serious spinal injuries. Prosecutors revealed that Adibi believed the boys had vandalized his vehicle by placing dog feces inside it, but an investigation showed that the prank was actually committed by his acquaintances. During the sentencing hearing, family members of the victims delivered emotional impact statements, highlighting the lasting effects of the incident. A restitution hearing is scheduled for September 20 to address the financial implications of the assault.
