Vietnam and China Strengthen Economic and Defence Ties Amid Tensions

Vietnam and China have agreed to enhance their defense and economic cooperation despite ongoing tensions related to territorial disputes in the South China Sea. This agreement was reached during a meeting between China's Premier Li Qiang and Vietnam's top leader To Lam in Hanoi on October 12, 2024. The discussions included commitments to maintain regular high-level exchanges and to expand cooperation in defense, security, and foreign affairs. Vietnam aims to attract more high-tech investments from China, while China will improve market access for Vietnamese agricultural products. The South China Sea remains a contentious area, with both nations having historical tensions over territorial claims. Recently, Vietnam protested against aggressive actions by Chinese vessels towards its fishermen in disputed waters. During the meeting, To Lam emphasized the need for both countries to manage and resolve their maritime differences more effectively. This meeting comes shortly after Lam took office as general secretary in early August 2024, following the death of his predecessor. His first overseas trip included a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, indicating a focus on strengthening bilateral relations. The two countries are prioritizing rail connectivity to enhance trade and cooperation. As China is Vietnam's largest trade partner, the outcomes of this meeting could significantly impact economic relations, especially in light of the ongoing territorial disputes that have historically strained ties between the two nations.
