JetBlue Sued Over Ankle Injury on Flight
- A woman from Long Island has filed a lawsuit against JetBlue Airlines following a fractured ankle incident caused by a low-hanging seat belt during a flight to the Bahamas.
- The lawsuit claims that the airline failed to provide necessary assistance after the injury occurred.
- This situation raises concerns about airline safety and passenger care during flights.
A Long Island woman, Maria Mistretta, is taking legal action against JetBlue Airways following a serious injury she sustained during a flight to the Bahamas on July 23. Mistretta claims that while attempting to stand up from her seat, her foot became entangled in a hanging seatbelt or another object, causing her to fall backward and suffer a broken ankle. The incident not only marred her vacation but also led to significant medical issues. In the lawsuit, Mistretta and her husband, Salvatore, allege that JetBlue failed to provide adequate medical assistance after the accident. They requested a first aid kit and ice from the flight crew, but were reportedly told that these items were packed away and inaccessible for the duration of the flight. The couple claims they were forced to wait until all other passengers disembarked before they could leave the plane, further delaying necessary medical attention. Upon arrival in the Bahamas, the Mistrettas assert they were discouraged from calling for an ambulance and instead had to arrange their own return flight to New York. Once back, Maria was diagnosed with a right ankle fracture, deep vein thrombosis, and exacerbation of a prior back injury at a New York emergency room. The couple is now seeking $170,000 in damages from JetBlue for the incident. Fox Business has reached out to JetBlue for a statement regarding the lawsuit but has yet to receive a response.
