Recent statistics reveal a troubling increase in sexual offences on public transport, with sexual assaults rising by 10% from 2,235 to 2,475 cases, and sexual harassment incidents doubling to 1,908. This alarming trend has prompted strong reactions from advocates and officials, who emphasize that the daily experiences of women commuting or socializing are marred by violence and harassment. The situation has been described as "completely unacceptable" and demands urgent attention. British Transport Police (BTP) has been actively addressing these issues, as highlighted by comedian Katherine Ryan, who commended their response to a harassment incident involving her daughter and a friend during a tube journey in London. The police's commitment to tackling such offences is underscored by recent legal actions, including a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order imposed on an offender and a nine-year prison sentence for another man convicted of rape on the Piccadilly Line. T/Detective Chief Superintendent Sarah White, head of Crime and Public Protection at BTP, reiterated the organization’s dedication to combating sexual offences, stating that every report is taken seriously. She acknowledged the under-reporting of these crimes and urged victims and witnesses to come forward, emphasizing that each report helps build a clearer picture of offenders. BTP continues to encourage the public to report incidents of sexual harassment or offences through text or the Railway Guardian app, reinforcing that there is no place for such behaviour on the transport network.
